Skin tags are small loose pieces of skin that hangs out from the rest of the skin on your body. No one, including doctors, can say definitively what causes skin tags. It is believed that they are caused after mid-life, during and after pregnancies, menopause, and by being over weight where skin rubs against skin until skin tags result. It is also believed that susceptibility to developing skin tags is hereditary and is passed through families genetically.

The techniques and methods of removing skin tags shown below are not to be considered medical advice or recommendations. They are being shown simply to inform you of ways people have removed skin tags in the privacy and comfort of their own homes.

Some people have herbal extracts like Dermisil and others mixed to form a cream for topical treatment of skin tags. This kind of treatment only attacks the tags tissues to cause them to dry up and fall off without causing any harm to any other healthy skin.

You can also tie a thin piece of string like dental floss, thread or fishing line tightly around the skin tag. This will effectively stop the flow of blood to the skin tag which will cause it to dry up and fall off within a week. You should keep the skin around the tag clean with alcohol or some other antiseptic.

There has been some success in removing skin tags by completely covering the tag with fingernail polish twice a day until the tag shrivels up and disappears, usually within two weeks.

One more drastic way of taking a skin tag off is to sterilize a pair of scissors or a large nail clipper and use them to cut the tag off. You will want to put a lot of alcohol on the cutting instrument before cutting. You will also want to clean the skin around the tag with alcohol prior to making the cut. After cutting the tag off, clean the area with peroxide and apply pressure till you get the bleeding stopped, then cover with sterile gauze or a band-aid until the area is healed. If the area develops any kind of infection see your doctor right away.

There are many other methods to cause skin tags to dry up and fall off and you may want to talk to a herbalist or holistic healer for other treatments that you can try at home.

If none of the home remedies work for you, you can still consult a Dermatologist for professional medical treatment.

Understanding What Causes Skin Tags

A skin tag is a small piece of loose skin that might have a stalk (called a peduncle). They simply look like a soft piece of skin hanging out from the rest of the skin. They can be either flesh colored or may be slightly brown. While most commonly called skin tags they are also know by other more complicated medical names such as fibroepithelial polyp, fibroma molluscum, papilloma colli, soft fibroma and Templeton skin tag as well as several others.

Many people wonder what causes skin tags. According to doctors and statistical reports, skin tags are believed to be caused by skin rubbing against itself. They are also thought to be hereditary and so they are passed genetically through families.

Some people, when they first see skin tags, worry that they might be an outward sign or symptom of a tumor or cancer. They are neither, and cause no health danger what so ever. What they most often cause is psychological trauma in the form of embarrassment. Because they dont’ understand what causes skin tags they will start hiding them. This is particularly true when many skin tags develop on the face, neck and hands. People start living a recluse lifestyle, which means they avoid being seen by other people.

While skin tags pose no health risk, they can be painful if they are in an area where clothing or jewelry are constant rubbing them. When this happens many people will seek out home remedies to treat them to either make them less sensitive or to remove them. While no doctors recommend using home remedies there are many holistic healing professionals that do. One such treatment is taking apple juice or lemon juice soaked on a cotton ball and holding it against the skin tag for several minutes several times a day. The acidity of the juice will often dry the skin tag to a point where it recedes back into the other skin, or it will cause the skin tag to just fall off.

When remedies such as the one listed above aren’t affective, or if a large number of skin tags appear, you may need the services of a Dermatologist. These doctors have several choices of treating skin tags for removal. They will also inform their patients that even with removal it isn’t uncommon for them to grow back, especially if their family has a history of developing skin tags.

Both men and women are equally susceptible to developing skin tags, even though no one can state definitively what causes skin tags. Remember that skin tags cause no health risks but can be embarrassing. If you have discovered them on your skin check for some home remedies to try and consult with a Dermatologist if you want or need to have them removed.
